MDOT MTA Partners with Zipcar to Provide Car-Sharing Options at Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink and MARC Train Stations
Transit Riders Who Enjoy Traffic-Free Train Travel Now Have On-Demand Access to a Zipcar Once They Reach Their Stop
BALTIMORE, MD (JANUARY 22, 2018) – The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) is partnering with Zipcar, the world’s leading car-sharing network, to add 15 Zipcars at eight Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink and MARC Train stations. Transit riders now will have daily, on-demand access to a vehicle to reach their final destination, which will help reduce reliance on personal vehicles, ease traffic congestion and improve carbon emissions.
“Car sharing expands mobility options for existing transit riders who can’t afford or don’t want the burden of full-time car ownership,” said MDOT MTA Administrator Kevin Quinn. “This program also will allow new, potential riders to try transit without losing the option to drive when necessary.”
Persons interested in reserving a Zipcar can join and reserve online and pick up at the following eight MDOT MTA rail stations:
- Light RailLink
- Mount Washington
- North Avenue
- Metro SubwayLink
- MARC Train
- West Baltimore
Zipcars can be reserved for one hour or up to seven days. Reservation costs include gas, maintenance, insurance and 180 miles of driving.
“At Zipcar, we’re big fans of public transit,” said Zipcar Regional Community Marketing Manager Kristina Matthews. “We know that it’s an important part of our members’ transportation portfolio and together offer members greater connectivity and the ability to live car-free or car-lite. We’re pleased to team up with MDOT MTA to reduce the reliance on personal vehicles, making Maryland a cleaner, greener place to live, work and play.”
To become a Zipcar member, an application must be submitted online. Once approved, members will receive a Zipcard to access vehicles worldwide. To unlock and operate a Zipcar, members hold the Zipcard to the car’s windshield. Zipcars must be returned to the location where they were reserved. Simply park the car in its reserved space and use the Zipcard or the Zipcar app to lock the vehicle.
