6th Annual Words on Wheels Poetry Adorns MTA
City Middle School Children Collaborate with Maryland Institute College of Art Students to Create Mobile Masterpieces for MTA Buses, Light Rail Trains
Baltimore, MD – (May 20, 2008) Twelve Baltimore area middle school children, selected as winners in this year’s Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) Words on Wheels competition, gathered to share their poems and see the artwork created to illustrate their words that was designed by Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) students.
The MTA, Eastern Savings Bank, The Goldsmith Family Foundation, Baltimore City Public Schools and MICA partnered to introduce the 2008 collection of Words on Wheels posters for MTA Local Buses and Light Rail trains. Participating middle schools include Lombard Middle, Northeast Middle, Mt. Royal Elementary Middle, New Song Academy, Winston Middle, Margaret Brent PreK-7 and Midtown Academy.
“The MTA is honored to serve as the canvas for these beautiful collaborations of words and art. We hope that these posters will brighten the lives of our customers and inspire other children in our community to take pride in their ride with the MTA. These children have written incredible poems with words that challenge adults to view the world through their eyes,” said Paul J. Wiedefeld, MTA Administrator.
The MTA Words on Wheels project started six years ago. The competition was designed to encourage students to add beauty to their environment and provide them with an opportunity to display their poetic talents.
