FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PUBLIC INVITED TO INFORMATION MEETINGS ON ICC
EXPRESS BUS SERVICE

New Routes Proposed to Utilize Completed Segment

BALTIMORE, MD (July 29, 2010) – The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) will hold informational meetings next week on proposals for new express bus service along the first segment of the Intercounty Connector (ICC) that is scheduled to be completed late this year.

The ICC will link the I-270/I-370 in Montgomery County and I-95 in Prince George’s County with a state-of–the-art, limited access tolled highway that will increase community mobility and safety. A key benefit of the ICC will be the ability of express bus service to operate efficiently along this key east-west corridor. Construction on the first 7.2-mile segment between I-370 and Georgia Avenue (MD97) is nearing completion.

Express bus routes are proposed to connect Park & Ride lots in Montgomery County to BWI Marshall Airport, the MARC Penn Line and Fort Meade. Airport service is proposed to run 7 days a week between 4:00 am and 11:00 pm. Fort Meade routes are planned for rush hour periods Monday through Friday. The new routes will operate as express service, with stops at major transit hubs and job centers. Initially, the express routes will utilize the completed first segment of the ICC for a portion of the trip, and then will use existing local roadways to reach final destinations. The express routes will utilize the entire 18-mile length of the ICC when the remaining segment is completed in late 2011/early 2012.
