MDOT MTA CharmPass Mobile Ticketing App Surpasses One Million Trips Purchased

Transit Riders Embrace Speed, Convenience and Security of Mobile Fares

BALTIMORE, MD (AUGUST 29, 2019) - CharmPass, the mobile ticketing app offered by the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA), has surpassed one million trips purchased in less than a year. The free app allows fare purchases from a smartphone using credit cards, debit cards or PayPal. It has been downloaded by more than 147,000 users in just 10 months, reflecting enthusiastic public response.

"People in Baltimore want their transit to be fast and easy to use," MDOT MTA Administrator Kevin Quinn said. "We are elated with the success of this innovative technology. And now with the purchase of its one-millionth trip, CharmPass literally helps our customers feel like they're one in a million, too."

Launched in September 2018, CharmPass allows the purchase of fares for Local Bus, Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink, MARC Train and Commuter Bus. Riders using CharmPass can transfer free between Local Bus, Light RailLink and Metro SubwayLink when traveling within a span of 90 minutes.

In April, CharmPass capabilities expanded as riders can now use SmartBenefits and other employer-sponsored transit programs to pay for transit passes. CharmPass is free to download wherever smartphone applications are available.

According to its Apple app store ranking, CharmPass has a satisfaction rating of 4.9 out of 5. The firm that developed the app, moovel North America, notes that MDOT MTA's CharmPass is the fastest-growing mobility app the company has launched with a transit agency over the past two years.
