MTA LOCAL BUS ROUTE ADDS TWO NEW SUNDAY MORNING TRIPS TO BWI THURGOOD MARSHALL AND ARUNDEL MILLS MALL
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Baltimore, MD (June 13, 2014) The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) announced today that starting this Sunday, June 15th, the MTA’s local 17 bus line will be adding * two additional trips to their Sunday schedule, to assist those who need to get to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport Sunday mornings between 4:22 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. The early morning service will fill the void that will be left by The BWI Business Partnership’s successful Sunrise Shuttle Service which expires at the end of the month. The #17 bus will depart from the University of Maryland Transit Center, stop at BWI and continue onto Arundel Mills Mall/Maryland Live!
The BWI Business Partnership’s Sunrise Shuttle Service met the growing demand of non-traditional 24/7 workforce needs. Developed by The BWI Business Partnership, an economic development and transportation management organization, the shuttle operated early Sunday and holiday mornings to BWI Marshall Airport. The project was funded by the Federal Jobs Access Reverse Commute (JARC) funds matched by the Abell Foundation for the last two years. The Sunrise Shuttle had excellent ridership carrying more than 150 passengers each Sunday, filling a vital transit need.
“The BWI Business Partnership identified a unique transit ridership need in the BWI region and filled that need with their Sunrise Shuttle,” said MTA Administrator & CEO Robert Smith. “We are happy to work with The Partnership to assist those customers who rely on public transit to get to work during non-traditional work hours. This service is exactly the type of expanded service we need to provide as we work with the private sector to meet the O’Malley-Brown Administration’s goal of doubling transit ridership.”
“We have been working closely with the MTA to ‘connect the dots’ between where people live and where the jobs are now,” said Linda Greene, Executive Director of The BWI Business Partnership. “Essential workers at our seven-day per week employment centers, who had great difficulty getting to work on time, can now rely on this sustainable service which can make the difference in retaining their jobs.”
